Chandrakant Patankar was one of the promising young cricketers who got the chance to represent the country when the chairman of the selection committee Lala Amaranth encouraged youth in the fifties. Patankar was a wicketkeeper and a lower order batsman was a surprise choice in place of regular wicketkeeper Naren Tamhane for the fourth Test of the five match series against New Zealand at Calcutta in 1955. He did not fared badly as he helped JM Ghorpade to add 37 runs for the eighth wicket after India were reduced to 7 for 88 on the opening morning. Besides scoring 13, he took the catch of both the opening batsmen and effected one stumping and took another catch. However, he was replaced by Tamhane and never got another chance to play for India. He played first class cricket for over two decades scoring 503 runs including one century at an average of 15.71 and effected 58 dismissals.
