Ghulam Guard

Ghulam Guard was an Indian cricketer who represented the Indian national side in 2 Tests between 1958 and 1960. He was a left-arm fast-medium pace bowler and was the first left-hander to open the bowling for India. He was born in 1925 in Surat, Gujarat. He was almost 33 when he made his Test debut in 1958-59 against the West Indies at Bombay. He picked up the wickets of John Holt (Jr), Conrad Hunte, and Gary Sobers. But he was not chosen for the rest of the series and was also not included in the side that toured England in 1959. He again played in the third Test against Australia in 1959-60 at Bombay but remained wicketless and was again dropped. That season he played a key role in Bombay’s Ranji trophy triumph taking nine wickets for 135 runs against Mysore in the final. He was a successful bowler for Bombay and Gujarat at the domestic level for over 15 years. He passed away in 1978 at the age of 52.
