Jayasinghrao Ghorpade was an Indian cricketer who represented the Indian national side in eight Test matches between 1953 and 1959. He was a stroke making right-hand batsman and a legbreak googly bowler. He was born in 1930 in Panchgani, Maharashtra. He made his debut against West Indies in the third Test at Port of Spain in 1953. Batting at No. 9, he scored a useful 35. He scored a valuable 24 again in the final Test. He played against New Zealand at Kolkata in 1955-56 where he top scored with 39 in a total of 132. He also played against Australia at Mumbai in 1956-57 and against West Indies two years later at Kolkata. He also toured England in 1959. He scored 100 runs in three Tests, scoring his highest Test score of 41 which was also the top score in the Indian innings which finished at 168 in the second Test at Lord’s. He played for Baroda in the domestic competition. He also served as a national selector. He passed away in 1978 aged 47.
