Kirti Azad

Kirti Azad was an aggressive right-handed batsman and a steady off-spinner who played 7 tests and 25 ODIs for the Indian national cricket team. He toured Australia and New Zealand in 1980-81. He then appeared in three Tests against England in 1981-82. He achieved little in these matches and was ignored till he was selected for the 1983 World Cup. His finest moment came in this tournament in the semi final against England when he bowled a very tidy spell and took the all important wicket of Ian Botham as India went on to win the match. He played a memorable quick innings of 71 not out in an exhibition day/night match against Pakistan at New Delhi in 1983 and guided India to a one wicket victory. His innings include seven sixes including three consecutive sixes of Pakistani bowler Jalaluddin. He appeared in three more Tests, one against Pakistan and two against the West Indies but met with little success and was dropped. However, he played ODI cricket for one more year and also was picked for Austral-Asia Cup before he was left out from the limited-overs format as well. He remained a stalwart for Delhi for years in Ranji trophy scoring 4867 runs at an average of 47.72 and picking up 162 wickets at an average of 28.91.
