
M. J. Gopalan was a double international who represented India in cricket as well as hockey. He played in only one Test at Kolkata against England in 1933-34 scoring 18 runs and picking up one wicket. He had a better record in first class cricket taking 194 wickets as a pace bowler and scoring 2916 runs in 78 matches. In 1936, he faced a difficult situation when he was selected for both the cricket tour of England and for the hockey squad at the Berlin Olympics. He opted cricket and was part of an unhappy tour. If he had opted for hockey, he would have been part of the gold medal winning team led by the legendary Dhyan Chand. However, as it turned out, he didn’t play a Test in England as the tour was marred by internal politics. He was a stalwart for Madras for about 25 years and also captained the side for several years. He had the honor of bowling the first delivery in Ranji trophy competition against Mysore at Madras in November 1934.
