Ramakant Desai

Ramakant Desai was an Indian pace bowler who represented the Indian national cricket team in 28 Tests. He was born in 1939 in Mumbai, Maharashtra. He was noteworthy for his bouncers which was unusual for an Indian bowler at that time. He made his Test Debut at the age of 19 against West Indies at Delhi in 1958-59 capturing 4 for 169. At Lord’s in 1959, England was reduced to 80 for six and he finished with 5 for 89 in the innings. He toured West Indies in 1961-62 and New Zealand in 1967–68. His best bowling figure was 6 for 56 against New Zealand at Bombay in 1964–65. At Bombay against Pakistan in 1960-61, he hit a quick 85 batting at No.10 and added a record 149 runs for the ninth wicket with P. G. Joshi. He scored a useful 32 with a fractured jaw against New Zealand at Dunedin in 1967-68. He represented Mumbai in domestic competition and was instrumental in winning the Ranji title for Mumbai on several occasions. He played for 11 years for Bombay. He retired from first class cricket in 1969 aged 30. He was appointed as a chairman of selectors in 1996. He resigned from the post one month before his death. He passed away in 1998 aged 58 years.
