Srinivasaraghavan Venkataraghavan

Srinivasaraghavan Venkataraghavan is one of the famous spin bowlers of Indian cricket who along with Erapalli Prasanna, Bhagwat Chandrasekhar  and Bishen Singh Bedi formed the famed Indian spin quartet of the 1960s and 1970s. He was a right-arm off break bowler who played in 57 Tests and 15 ODIs for India. He was also a useful tail-end bat and a good close-in fielder. He made his Test debut at the age of 20 against the touring New Zealand side in 1965. He took 12 wickets in the Delhi Test that led India to victory. By the end of the series he had established himself as a world-class spinner. He was the vice captain of the Indian side that toured the West Indies and England in 1970–71. He was the captain of the Indian side in both the 1975 and 1979 cricket world cups. He was also the captain of the India team in a four-Test series against England in 1979. His international career was one of the longest for an Indian player which lasted from February 1965 to September 1983. He captained Tamil Nadu and South Zone in domestic competitions for more than a decade. He also represented Derbyshire in English county cricket from 1973 to 1975. After retiring from first class cricket in 1985, he became a cricket administrator and managed the Indian Test squad. He then turned into an umpire. He officiated in 73 Tests and 52 ODIs in his career as an umpire. In 2003, he was honored with the Padma Shri.
