Subhash Gupte

Subhash Gupte was an Indian cricketer who played 36 Tests for India. He was a right-arm legbreak bowler, considered as one of the finest spin bowlers in the history of Test cricket. He toured West Indies in 1952-53 picking up 27 wickets. In 1954-55, he was the most successful bowler in Pakistan taking 21 wickets. He took 34 wickets against New Zealand at home in 1955-56. He took 9 for 102 against West Indies at Kanpur in 1958-59. In his penultimate Test he bowled a magical spell of 4 for 6 off 18 balls at Kanpur against England. He played first class cricket from 1947 to 1964 for several teams, namely Mumbai, Rajasthan and Bengal. His younger brother Baloo Gupte also played Test cricket for India.
