Vijay Mehra

Vijay Mehra was a right-handed opening batsman who represented the Indian national cricket team in 8 Tests between 1955 and 1964. He was born in 1938 at Amritsar, Punjab. He was the youngest Indian to play Test cricket at 17 years 265 days which was a record till Maninder Singh broke it in 1982-83. He scored 10 in his debut Test. In the next match at Delhi, he scored 32 and put on 68 runs for the first wicket with Nari Contractor. Then after a gap of six years he reappeared in the Indian squad in 1961-62 against England at Kolkata. He opened the innings and made a gallant 62 before getting injured which forced him to bat at No.11 in the second innings and miss the next Test. He toured West Indies in 1962, playing three Tests. He scored his best 62 in the fourth Test at Port of Spain when he and Salim Durani piled up 144 runs for the second wicket. He scored a useful 39 in the final Test at Kingston. He then played against England at Madras almost two years later. He then played the next Test at Bombay which remains his last match of his Test career. He passed away in 2006 at the age of 68.
