Salim Durani

Salim Durani is an all-rounder who represented the Indian national cricket team in 29 Tests between 1960 and 1973. He was a left-handed batsman and a slow left-arm orthodox bowler. He was born in Afghanistan in 1934 and later shifted to Jamnagar. He is the only Indian Test cricketer to have been born in Afghanistan. After partition, he continued to live in Jamnagar while his father moved to Karachi. He made his Test debut against Richie Benaud’s Australia in Mumbai in 1960. He was instrumental in the series victory for India against England in 1961-62 taking 8 and 10 wickets at Kolkata and Chennai respectively. He scored his only Test century against West Indies at Port of Spain, Trinidad in 1962. He played a major role in India’s victory against the West Indies in Port of Spain, Trinidad, 1971, taking the wickets of Clive Lloyd and Gary Sobers. He played for Gujarat, Rajasthan and Saurashtra in the domestic competition. He is the first India cricketer to receive the Arjuna Award. He was also honored with the C.K. Nayudu Lifetime Achievement Award by the BCCI in 2011. Besides cricket, he also appeared in a film titled Charitra opposite Parveen Babi in 1973.
