Jamie Dornan addresses the pressure of replacing Viggo Mortensen as Aragorn

Jamie Dornan

CONFIRMED

Jamie Dornan has spoken publicly about the pressure of taking over Aragorn, the role Viggo Mortensen made iconic in Peter Jackson’s Lord of the Rings trilogy. Warner Bros. and New Line officially named Dornan as Strider at CinemaCon in April, and now the Northern Irish actor is facing the weight of following one of fantasy cinema’s most beloved heroes.

What we know

Variety, Deadline and The Hollywood Reporter all report that Warner Bros. and New Line announced Dornan as Strider, also known as Aragorn, at the studio’s CinemaCon presentation in Las Vegas on April 14, 2026. Leo Woodall was announced in the same moment as Halvard.

The Hollywood Reporter and Deadline report a stacked cast around him. Andy Serkis directs and returns as Gollum. Ian McKellen is back as Gandalf, Elijah Wood as Frodo and Lee Pace as Thranduil, and Kate Winslet joins too. The film is set to open on Dec. 17, 2027.

The story sits between The Hobbit and The Lord of the Rings.

Mortensen’s exit was not a surprise. Before the cast reveal, Serkis confirmed to The Hollywood Reporter that a new actor would play Aragorn, and NME noted that the CinemaCon news followed earlier reports that Mortensen would not return.

Before the announcement, a wave of casting guesses swirled. Empire said those rumors were passed to Deadline, THR, Variety, The Wrap and Empire itself. The official announcement, reported by Empire and Variety, put that guessing game to rest.

Dornan already has one fan on set. Woodall told L’Officiel, “my Aragorn is Jamie Dornan,” as reported by SFF Gazette and Pajiba.

Who is Jamie Dornan?

Dornan was born on May 1, 1982, and is from Northern Ireland. The Irish Star reported he turned 44 in 2026. The Irish Star also reports he has been married to composer and musician Amelia Warner since 2013.

His career now takes him to Middle-earth.

What we don’t know yet

We have not verified Dornan’s full remarks about following Mortensen, so we are not quoting him here rather than risk putting words in his mouth. What is clear is that he has acknowledged the pressure publicly.

Mortensen has never given one clear reason for stepping away. In a 2024 interview with UNILAD, he said he was open to de-aging if done well, though he was not crazy about how it was used in The Irishman. Whether that was the deciding factor has not been announced.

Beyond the official blurb describing Aragorn’s quest to capture Gollum, Elijah Wood has confirmed a leaked synopsis at Fan Expo Vancouver, and a short teaser marking the start of production is already available.

What it means

Casting a younger Aragorn neatly solves the problem Mortensen himself raised. Instead of digitally smoothing out a beloved actor, the film hands the character to someone new at an earlier point in his journey.

For Dornan, it is the biggest franchise role of his career and a famously tough act to follow. Having McKellen, Wood and Serkis around him should help bridge old and new, and a supportive co-star like Woodall does not hurt either. Fans will get their verdict on Dec. 17, 2027.
