Gundappa Viswanath

Gundappa Viswanath is a former Indian cricketer who represented the Indian national side in Tests and ODIs. He was a right-handed batsman who played in 91 Tests and 25 ODIs for India from 1969 to 1983. He is considered as one of the finest batsman of India during the 1970s. He represented Karnataka at the domestic level throughout his career. He is known to produce his best performance on difficult pitches and conditions. His score of 97 not out against the formidable bowling attack of West Indies at Madras in 1974–75 was considered as one of the finest performances by an Indian which eventually resulted in an win for India. His 112 again against the West Indies at Port of Spain helped India chase a victory target of 403 which at that time was the highest run chase in the history of Test cricket. He had a batting average of more than 50 against Australia and West Indies. He captained the national side in 2 Tests. He served as an ICC match referee from 1999 to 2004 after retirement. He also served as the Chairman of the national selection committee and was also the manager of the national side. He was conferred with Col. C K Naidu Lifetime Achievement Award in 2009 by the Board of Control for Cricket in India.
